There are Three basic types of dental plans. The first is what we call an insurance type plan where you have your deductible, coinsurance and copay features. This insurance coverage pays usual and customary charges. We call this type of plan a Dental Insurance Plan. However premiums are on the high side with waiting periods for major dental proplems. The biggest advantage with this plan is there is no dentist list so it works with all dentist anywhere.

The second type of dental plan is referred to as a dental discount plan or dental referal plan. The dentist simply gives you a discount with out submission to an insurance company for payment. In return the dental plan refers him with many potential patients. So what he loses because of a discount he gains in volume. The premium is much cheaper with no waiting periods and you have limited number of dentists to choose from.

The third basic type of dental plan is much like the second where patients are referred to the dentist. But thats where the similarities stop. First you pick a dentist you always go to. Then the dentist recieves a percentage of the premium that you pay to the dental plan whether you make an appointment or not. This is how an HMO works with health insurance. So we call this an HMO dental plan. Now with this kind of dental coverage you have no waiting periods, most all services are covered, you can use many specialists, your dentist list is much more comprehensive and a family of four can pay less than four hundred dollars a year. That is less than nine dollars a month per family member!
